A Goalie Mask Post

While sorting through a couple of card boxes, I hauled out a few of the best goalie mask cards that I came across.  I was lookng for close ups, mid-game photography.  I think these first five cards are great starters.

1991-92 Upper Deck #137 Patrick Roy

1997-98 Upper Deck Collector's Choice
#208 Patrick Lalime

1997-98 Upper Deck Collector's Choice #56 Patrick Roy

1998-99 UD Choice #63 Ed Belfour

Lalime's debut mask artwork with the Penguins has been a personal favorite of mine. As a Penguins fan it was something to cheer about when Lalime was hot from his start, going on a 16 game unbeaten streak. I only recently learned that the penguin is breakng through an egg and not an ice iceberg as had originally throught for years.

Which is your favorite mask design from the above?  Belfour has icon mask status and so does Roy's Canadiens design largely due to his legacy in hockey as opposed to the actual artwork.  But maybe you'll disagree.

  1. Even though Belfour's mask is iconic(for any team he played for), I'd have to say that Lalime's is my favorite of the ones posted. Ken Wregget also had a nice mask when he was with the Penguins. That Danny DeVito Penguin mask was sick.

Also, as you can see, I have started up my own card blog. I see that you're not posting any more on Thrifted Gold?

  2. That 97-98 Lalime is so going on my wantlist for my mask binder.

In general, it really surprises me how much Collector's Choice stuff is in the binder with nice close up shots of some backup type goalies such as Blaine Lacher and Jason Muzzatti and name goalies like Moog & Potvin.

    1. It's a nice card for sure.

I know, I see that trend as well. They had some nce photography; can't seem to find anything close up to the goalie mask before the 90s.

  3. Yes, it is a very cool project and idea. You will definitely have to fin some Between the Pipes cards from In The Game since they don't have a NGHL License they use use the goalies in their masks for close ups. Especially the Masked Men inserts.

But if I see a cool card with a goalie mask close up I definitely picked them for the right price.

    1. I don't really like the Between The Pipes stuff. Hoping to find cards with a mid-game shot of the mask. Although the Masked Men cards are okay.

  4. The Roy one, for me, is the epitome of masks. It didn't need a fancy (or ironic) drawing because of what the team's logo means for the sport, and he just owns it with his face below it like no other goalie since.

I also like Vanbiesbrouck's Panther mask, as well as Lundqvist's current Liberty one (1999 alternate Rangers logo on top, statue on the side).

My favourite modern one is Halak's first Canadiens one, though, with Roy hoisting the Cup on the side and the devil up top.

    1. Love your picks, I also really like Vanbiesbrouck's Panther mask as well; another 90s iconic goaltender mask design.

  5. Belfour. I always loved how the 'Eagle' was incorporated into the feathers. Very cool.
